San Antonio’s Fiesta is a vibrant and tradition and history, and at the heart of this grand event are the Fiesta Queens. These queens – adorned in stunning gowns and intricate crowns – epitomize the grace and cultural richness of the festival. From the elaborate parades to the elegant balls, the fashion of Fiesta Queens has evolved over the years, reflecting both historical influences and contemporary trends. Each queen’s attire is not just about beauty—it tells a story of heritage, community, and personal expression.

The tradition of Fiesta Queens dates back to the early 20th century, when the first queens were crowned to honor the city’s cultural heritage and contribute to the festive atmosphere. Over the decades, the role of a Fiesta Queen has grown to embody leadership, philanthropy, and a deep connection to San Antonio’s diverse community. The gowns, often custom-made, are a spectacular blend of artistry and craftsmanship, designed to capture the essence of each event they grace.

One of the cherished titles within the Fiesta Court is the Fiesta Teen Queen, represented by a vibrant young woman who brings her unique style and vision to the festivities. This year, we had the pleasure of speaking with the current Fiesta Teen Queen, Ryan Scrimpshire, who shared her journey and insights into the world of Fiesta royalty.

What was your platform for Fiesta Teen?

“Embrace Life in Full Bloom. Inspired by my recovery from spinal fusion surgery, I embody a life of gratitude and resilience. My crown, train, and medal reflect this journey, with flowers prominently featured in their design.”

How did you get involved with the Fiesta Court?

“I got involved through the Woman’s Club of San Antonio. The club has one of the seven official Fiesta Queens, The Fiesta Teen Queen.”

Is participating in the Fiesta Court something you wanted to do for years, or did your interest develop over time? In other words, what piqued your interest?

“I used to see the royalty in the Battle of the Flowers Parades and imagine myself being one of them.”

What is the process to be crowned Fiesta Teen Queen?

“The Fiesta Teen Queen is selected by the club from a pool of qualified Ingenue candidates during the beginning of their senior year. The Ingenue must meet certain criteria and those that are qualified can run and the club members vote on the winner.”

What inspired you to pick your gowns?

“I love flowy style gowns and tried to coordinate each gown with the theme and tone of the event or parade. It was also important to me that the gowns enhanced my crown.”

How did you select your wardrobe for all your events?

“Each outfit was selected to compliment my custom-made crown and align with my platform ‘Live Life in Full Bloom.’ I found Hemline located at The Quarry very helpful with my vision.”

Through her dedication and style, the Fiesta Teen Queen continues to be an inspiring figure in the San Antonio Fiesta, representing the future of this cherished tradition while honoring its rich past. Her involvement and the meticulous care in selecting her wardrobe highlight the importance of fashion in celebrating and preserving cultural heritage. ■
