The Listeto String Quartet performs

The tall, ornate sign of the Josephine Theater

If you’ve ever been scrolling Facebook or Instagram and seen an ad for one of those candlelight performances by Fever, and you haven’t gone yet, I can assure you–you’re missing out. I recently had the joy of attending one; a night of hip hop performed by the Listeto String Quartet. As soon as I entered the historic Josephine Theater, I felt a serene energy created by the multitude of candles and stray notes drifting into the lobby from the stage.

These candlelight performances occur regularly, and are an enjoyable, affordable experience. A Josephine Theater volunteer of three years,Teresa, spoke highly of owner Tommy Miller and his mission to keep the theater accessible to the entire community. She informed me that even though Tommy has been approached by multiple developers, he refuses to back down on ensuring that the Josephine remains in operation, and includes free parking as well as providing the space to local groups in need of a stage to host their events.

As I was enjoying the sweet string arrangements of artists including Outkast, Ms. Lauryn Hill, and Dr. Dre, I looked around the sold-out theater to see people of all ages and backgrounds enjoying the music. There to enjoy a well-rounded tribute to hip hop were many couples on dates, groups of friends out for a nice Friday night, and even those who went solo for a little me time. These candlelight events hosted by Fever are perfect for anyone looking for a classy evening of music and culture, without having to break the bank. Sending out a huge thanks to the Josephine Theater for their commitment to bringing art and culture to all of San Antonio.
