Fit in the City: Urban Lagree Grand Opening

The machines at Urban Lagree look harmless and unassuming, but believe me when I tell you they are a force to be reckoned with. I’m writing this two days after the grand opening of the west coast-influenced fitness trend, and I’m still feeling the soreness from what felt only mildly strenuous at the time.

Owner Abbie Rosser was buzzing with excitement as she introduced herself to me when I arrived. She gave me a short tour of the event, which included local healthy favorites Revolucion with fresh granola and juices, as well as the recently-opened Fermenteria with freshly-canned sparkling kefir beverages.

There was a class ending as the participants for the next one were showing up while Abbie explained the significance of Lagree, “This is a great workout to add in if you do crossfit or other intense forms of fitness.” She explained it can help stretch and repair tight joints and muscles in a way other exercises can’t. Personally, I’ve struggled with a painful hip and lower back since working several years walking the concrete floors at Amazon facilities, so this definitely made me more excited for the class to start.

As the class transition energy died down, I made my way over to a Lagree machine, took my shoes off, and made friends with my neighbor. As the class began, I had no idea what to expect. My neighbor and I commiserated with one another, completely confused by the new language being spoken by the instructor, Sarah Thornton, who was very kind helping us figure it out as we went along. Once we got in the groove, forty-five minutes went by like a flash. What I incorrectly assumed was going to be a breeze had left me with damp clothes and gelatinous legs.

I grabbed my complimentary tote bag and a nice cold energy drink, thanked Abbie for her hospitality, and waddled out to my car. I look forward to more of these popping up around San Antonio. Lagree is an added layer of difficulty to yoga and pilates. I challenge anyone reading this to head on over to Urban Lagree and try something new. It’s a great way to meet new people and get outside of your comfort zone a little bit.
